One Parent's Experience of Stress-Free Mealtimes and CHOTS

A scream of rage brings me running into the dining room.  Our youngest son has his cereal bowl on his head and his plate up in front of him like a shield, dinner knife in hand. Our oldest has his glass raised above his head, ready to throw. Both their faces are contorted with rage and fear.  We haven’t even started our meal yet, and before I can stop them, youngest has run towards oldest and jabbed his fork into brother’s cheek.  I hold back tears whilst separating them into different rooms yet again.  This was not how, as a Christian parent, I had imagined family meal times to be.  Where was the joyful family together time at the end of the day, where we shared food, fellowship, hopes and dreams together? Despite all my best efforts, I couldn’t even get our family to sit around a table together without outright violence.  Our youngest son was losing weight as he ate so little because meal times were so stressful, and there were more...

Meltdown SOS!

“Meltdown SOS! Survival toolkit”

Does your child or loved one have really frequent mega-meltdowns? Are you all exhausted by them? We have often been so exhausted by our children’s frequent meltdowns that we have been simply unable to think straight about long term solutions because simply getting through each day has been such a struggle. It is a really really hard place to be.

This article has some tips to enable you to reduce the number of meltdowns enough so that you have the energy to put in place some longer term strategies.  If your child is having frequent really big explosions it is a sign that they may have either some unmet sensory processing needs or some other unmet need. We recommend that you sign up to the CHOTS ‘sensory supers’ programme (  and join our community as we journey together towards sensory health. That will help you to understand and heal the underlying issues that are at the...

Distraction and Lack of Focus

Distraction and Lack of Focus

There are many reasons why children are easily distracted. When children do not get enough sleep, they can be easily distracted. Also, when children are experiencing stress and anxiety, this can be a factor that affects their ability to focus, and thus they become distracted with their thoughts. However, when a child demonstrates an ongoing problem with focus, there is something going on behind the scenes. I encourage parents to always look beyond the surface symptoms and tap into the root of the issue.

Easily Distracted Children

Lack of focus is a symptom of something else that can be happening underneath the surface. ADHD is a common cause of focus problems, and it is something that runs in families. But ADHD is not the only thing that can be causing a lack of focus problems. Your child may have difficulty with concentrating on one activity or following directions. Your child may be demonstrating difficulty in keeping a conversation. No matter the...

Raising a Confident Child

Raising a Confident Child

To raise a confident child is to build their self-esteem - who they are in Christ. How do you build a child’s self-esteem? Model what you want to see, encourage and empower through the words you speak onto them, and your actions. Our children watch us daily. They have a front-row seat at how you react and manage your emotions, and cope with situations.

Furthermore, they are always learning from us, consciously and unconsciously. Raising a confident child takes work and mindfulness in the Christian sense of the word. We must be intentional about how we communicate and how we relate to our children at all times. And for this to take place effectively, we must develop self-awareness.

Awareness leads to management. Let us say that you must help your child develop sensory skills and motor skills. To help you do that, you must know your own sensory processing patterns and learn how to manage them best to teach your child. Your child needs...

Parenting with Purpose

Parenting With Purpose

Parenting is a journey with many things to discover. As parents, we love our children, and no one knows our kids are better than we do. We know their weaknesses and strengths. We know their gifts and talents. We know them well. However, some things sit outside of our scope of knowledge, and thus it requires that we become inquisitive and learn the ins and outs of a child’s mind. This requires discernment, a learning journey, and strategic guidance. Remember that you cannot see what your eyes have not been trained to see. Let us parent with purpose, wisdom, and discernment.

James 1:5, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Think about the struggles that you face with your child. Their behaviours are like mirrors reflecting back at you. Each behaviour reveals something about their emotional world, the environments they navigate, and their interactions with others. As...

Homeschooling a Sensory Child

Homeschooling a Sensory Child: What You Need to Know

Most people think the school environment is the best place for a child. But what if it isn’t? What if your child isn’t thriving? What if you have different priorities in life to the school? What if you see a big difference in behaviour at school and home? What about if it feels that you get your ‘child back’ during the holidays only to ‘lose them’ again when they return to school? Is there another way?

Your sensory toddler has grown into a sensory child, which means the time has come for you to explore their educational needs. You’re not sure if a bustling nursery or preschool is the right fit, especially if your child reacts to loud sounds and bright lights. You may be thinking of homeschooling them, but is that the best choice?

There are so many reasons to consider the homeschool life, and many scenarios to consider. From the freedom to work at your own pace, to educating in a...

What is Proprioception?

What Is Proprioception?

It’s said that we have five basic senses: touch, smell, hearing, sight, and taste. Yet there’s a sixth sense (and more!) that’s often recognised as such because it’s just as important as those other five. It’s known as proprioception.

What is proprioception?

Proprioception, also sometimes referred to as kinesthesia, is a sense that affects our body positioning and self-movement. Joint, tendon, and muscle neurons known as proprioceptors drive the movements dictated by this sensory system.

Perhaps this issue exists as a reminder of something that is always present but is not seen, yet is extremely powerful and important. Just like it is such a human tendency to forget about God until we need Him, we tend to forget about proprioception until we have issues with it! This secret sense is part of God’s design that touches so many parts of our daily lives. But what does it mean when things aren’t working typically?

Anger Management, Emotional Regulation, and Its Relationship to the Tactile System

Anger Management, Emotional Regulation, and Its Relationship to the Tactile System.

Everyone gets angry sometimes. Adults can usually express their anger as well as the source of it, but for children, it’s not always so easy. What’s even more mystifying is if your child seems okay one minute, then extremely angry the next. What is causing such dramatic changes in their mood?

One such cause of emotional outbursts in children is tactile defensiveness, otherwise known as over-reactivity or over-responsivity. Common in but not exclusive to children with autism, tactile defensive patients are sensitive to textures in food and the clothing they wear daily as well as physical affection.

In today’s post, we’ll explain anger management’s connection to the tactile system and emotional regulation. We’ll also discuss more signs of tactile defensiveness so you can identify it in your own child as well as offer some suggestions for treating or at...

What is the Vestibular System?

Understanding the Vestibular System and Its Disorders

Each day, our bodies engage in a series of functions we don’t really consciously think much about. For example, our hearts beat on their own, we breathe without making any effort, and we keep our balance without trying. That last bodily function is a product of the vestibular system. What is this and why is it important?

The vestibular system manages our posture, keeps our head and eyes in place when our bodies move, and allows us to maintain our balance. Disorders of the vestibular system may cause alterations to a person’s psychological or cognitive wellbeing as well.

Like the many fine details of our lives, God has created an intricate system that manages our stability. For most of us, we only experience the sensation of being thrown off kilter when spinning in a circle or riding a roller coaster. But, for those who suffer from sensory issues of the vestibular system, the ride is not so smooth. As you read, think...
